No Library Planned for Trinidad through 2030

According to D.C. Public Library’s recently released Master Facilities Plan, called Next Libris, no new library serving Trinidad specifically is planned through the rest of the decade. Rosedale, the closest library, is due to be replaced with a larger facility.

Trinidad sits between two areas in Ward 5 both identified as being gaps in service where new libraries will be built — “Edgewood/Eckington/Stronghold” and “Gateway/Fort Lincoln/Arboretum” — although both sites would likely be farther from Trinidad than Rosedale Library is now.

DCPL considers an area served by a library if there is a library within three-quarters of a mile. By that standard, about two-thirds of Trinidad (below) is served by the Rosedale Library, across Bladensburg Road and the starburst intersection in Kingman Park. Much of SMD 5D01, especially Ivy City, is not close to any library.

Rosedale Library, which DCPL calls a “small neighborhood library,” will be rebuilt into a “full-service library.” Rosedale is slated for expansion based on a variety of elements ranging from collection size to storytelling space, and neighborhood factors like forecast population growth.

According to the Plan, “A larger library will help alleviate the low per capita square footage for Rosedale and the surrounding neighborhood libraries, Northeast Library and Southeast Library.” Tier Two of the Plan, which involves rebuilding the Rosedale and Deanwood libraries, is expected to cost 40 to 45 million dollars. The Plan does not lay out a timeline for construction.

As recently as 2009, the H Street NE corridor was served by the tiny, R.L Christian “Porta Branch” at 13th Street and H Street, as seen in the heritage brochure (below.) This structure remained empty for years, occasionally repurposed for art and other functions until it was torn down a few years ago. This year Mozzeria DC opened on the same corner, in a new mixed-use building.

The words and phrases of neighborhoods and institutions within ANC 5D, “Trinidad,” “Ivy City,” Gallaudet,” “Carver,” “Langston” and “Union Market,” do not appear in the Plan at all.
